Shared error text fits one cause

#47uncommon52 sightingsfirst seen August 2026

What goes wrong

An error message or comment sits on a code path that several callers or failure causes share, or was copied from a sibling path, and its wording fits only one of them. On the other paths the advice cannot be followed or the statement is false.

Example

One catch block shows 'Check your internet connection' for every failure, including the server's own 500 while the user is clearly online.

Not to be confused with

Needs text that speaks for more than one path; not a single-path comment that aged (Documented guarantee not kept by code), and not a participant list (Stale consumer list in comment).
